Age Calculator: Exact Age in Years, Months and Days
This age calculator works out exactly how old someone is from a date of birth, expressed the way people actually count age: in whole years, then remaining months, then remaining days. It also gives the totals in months, weeks, days, hours and minutes, names the weekday you were born on, and counts down to your next birthday. The second field defaults to today but accepts any date, so you can work out how old someone was at a past event or will be at a future one. Leap years and the different lengths of months are handled correctly throughout.

How Age Is Actually Counted
Years first, then what is left over. Someone born on 15 June 1990 turns 35 on 15 June 2025. On 4 September 2025 they are 35 years, 2 months and 20 days old. The calculation subtracts each unit in turn rather than converting everything to days.
Borrowing is where it gets interesting. If the day of the month has not yet arrived, a month is borrowed and its real length in days is added. Going from 31 January to 1 March means borrowing February, which contributes 28 days or 29 in a leap year.
Dividing days by 365 does not work. It ignores leap years and drifts by roughly a day every four years. Over a lifetime that accumulates to more than a fortnight, which is why a proper calendar calculation matters.
Age increases on the birthday, not before. In most of the world a person is legally a given age from the anniversary of birth. The day before their birthday they are still the previous age, however close it is.
How to Use the Calculator
Enter a date of birth. The field uses your device date picker, so the format matches whatever your system uses. Any date is accepted, past or future, and impossible dates such as 30 February are rejected rather than quietly rolled forward.
Change the second date to measure elsewhere in time. It starts on today but works for any date. Set it to a wedding, an exam, a first day at school or a date years ahead and the age is worked out for that moment.
Read the three headline numbers together. Years, months and days are one answer split into three parts, not three separate figures. Reading only the years discards most of the precision.

Why Month Lengths Matter
Months are not a fixed unit. They run from 28 to 31 days, so any calculation treating a month as 30 days is approximating. Over a few months the error is a day or two, which is enough to matter on a form.
The end of the month is the awkward case. Someone born on 31 January reaching an age in February has no 31st to reach. The convention used here borrows the actual length of the preceding month, which produces the result people expect.
Different systems disagree here. Some software rounds end of month dates to the last valid day, others push into the following month. Discrepancies of a day between two calculators almost always come from this, and both can be defended.
Leap Years and 29 February
The rule has three parts. A year is a leap year if divisible by four, except years divisible by 100, unless also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be.
Total days count every leap day you lived through. Because the total comes from the real interval between two dates rather than a multiplication, someone born in 1990 has roughly nine extra days in their total compared with a naive 365 day calculation.
Leap day birthdays need a convention. Someone born on 29 February has no birthday in most years. This calculator uses 28 February in common years, which matches the usual legal treatment, though some jurisdictions and many families prefer 1 March.
Reading the Totals
Total months counts completed months only. A person aged 35 years and 2 months has lived 422 complete months. The leftover days are shown separately rather than being rounded into the month count.
Total days is the exact interval. Every calendar day between the two dates, leap days included, which is why it is the most reliable figure for anything requiring precision.
Hours and minutes assume midnight to midnight. They are total days multiplied out, so they do not account for the hour of birth. For an exact figure to the hour you would need a time of birth, which most people do not have to hand.
Weeks are whole weeks. Total days divided by seven and rounded down, with the remaining days left in the day count rather than shown as a fraction.
When an Exact Age Is Needed
Medical and paediatric contexts. Drug dosing, growth charts and developmental milestones for young children are all specified in months, and a baby's age in weeks is routinely needed in the first year.
School admission and sports eligibility. Both usually depend on age at a specific cut-off date rather than today, which is exactly what the second field is for.
Legal and administrative forms. Pensions, insurance, visas and benefit entitlements frequently need an age at a defined date, and getting it wrong can delay an application.
Genealogy and records. Working out how old an ancestor was at a marriage, census or death is a routine part of family research, and the same calculation handles dates centuries back.
Age Reckoning Around the World
Most of the world counts from zero at birth, adding a year on each anniversary. That is the system this calculator uses and the one nearly all legal frameworks now follow.
East Asian age reckoning worked differently. A baby was considered one year old at birth and everyone gained a year at the lunar new year rather than on their birthday, which could make a newborn two within days. South Korea, the last country to use it widely in daily life, moved to the international system in 2023.
Some traditions still use lunar calendars for birthdays, so a person may celebrate on a date that shifts each year against the Gregorian calendar while their legal age follows the fixed one.
Where Simple Methods Go Wrong
Subtracting birth year from current year. This is right only after the birthday has passed. Before it, the answer is a year too high, which is the single most common age error on forms.
Dividing total days by 365. The drift is about one day every four years, so a fifty year old is short by roughly twelve days. Fine for a rough figure, wrong for anything official.
Treating every month as 30 days. Spreadsheets often do this silently and the error compounds across a long span.
Time zones on the boundary. A date entered near midnight can shift by a day depending on how a system interprets it. This calculator works with plain calendar dates and no time component, which avoids the problem entirely.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing date formats. Third of April is 04/03 in the United States and 03/04 almost everywhere else. The date picker used here removes the ambiguity, but it is worth watching whenever a date is typed as text.
Forgetting to change the reference date. If you need an age at a cut-off date rather than today, set the second field. It is easy to read today's answer and assume it applies.
Rounding months up. A child of 11 months is not one year old, and in medical or educational contexts that distinction genuinely matters.
Mistyping the year. A single wrong digit produces a wildly wrong age. If the result looks surprising, check the year first.
