Business Days Calculator: Working Days, Deadlines and Service Levels
This calculator answers the two working day questions that come up constantly. How many working days are there between two dates, and what date is a given number of working days from now. Both take account of the weekend you actually work and any public holidays you paste in, and both are inclusive of the end points in the way contracts and service level agreements normally state them. It walks the calendar day by day rather than using a formula, because no formula survives an arbitrary holiday list.

What Counts as a Working Day
A working day is a calendar day that is not a weekend and not a holiday. That sounds obvious until you realise every part of it varies: which days are the weekend, which holidays apply, and whether a holiday falling on a Saturday still costs you a day.
Holidays on a weekend are not counted twice. If Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, the day was already excluded as a weekend, so it appears in the weekend total rather than the holiday total. That keeps the three figures adding up to the calendar total.
Substitute days are a separate matter. Many countries move a holiday to the following Monday when it lands on a weekend. This calculator does not assume that rule, because it varies by country and sometimes by year, so add the substitute date to the list if it applies to you.
Business day is not the same as working day everywhere. Banking, shipping and legal definitions differ, and some exclude days when a bank is closed even if offices are open. Where money or a court is involved, check the definition in the document that governs it.
How to Use Both Modes
Count between dates takes a start and an end and reports how many working days lie between them, inclusive of both. The breakdown underneath shows calendar days, weekend days and holidays so you can see where the difference went.
Add working days takes a starting date and a number, and tells you the date you reach. It reports how many calendar days elapsed and how many non working days were skipped, which is the number people usually want when explaining a deadline to someone else.
Negative numbers count backwards, which is how you work out the latest date to start something that must finish by a fixed deadline.
Paste holidays one per line in YYYY-MM-DD form. Commas and semicolons work too, and anything unparseable is ignored rather than causing an error, so pasting a messy list from a calendar is fine.
Weekends Are Not Universal
Saturday and Sunday is common but far from global. Much of the Middle East works Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the rest days. Getting this wrong on a cross border project shifts every deadline by two days.
Some places have a single rest day. Sunday only is still the norm in parts of Asia and Africa, and in many sectors regardless of country, which is why that option is here.
Countries have changed their weekend recently. The United Arab Emirates moved to Saturday and Sunday in 2022, having previously used Friday and Saturday, so historical calculations for the same country may need a different setting than current ones.
No weekend at all is a legitimate setting for continuous operations such as manufacturing, hospitality or support rotas, where only public holidays interrupt the count.
Handling Public Holidays
Holidays are entered rather than assumed, because no built in list can be right for everyone. They vary by country, by region within a country, and often by industry, and some are announced only months in advance.
Regional holidays catch people out. Scotland and England share a country but not a holiday calendar, German holidays differ by federal state, and United States federal holidays are not automatically observed by private employers.
Company holidays count too. Shutdown weeks between Christmas and New Year, company founding days and local closures all affect a real deadline even though no government recognises them.
Keep a list per project. The fastest way to use this tool repeatedly is to keep the relevant holiday dates in a note and paste them each time, which also makes the assumptions visible to whoever reviews your dates.
Which Days Are Counted
Counting mode includes both ends. Monday to Friday is five working days, not four. This matches how working day counts are normally quoted and how spreadsheet functions such as NETWORKDAYS behave.
Projection mode excludes the starting day. One working day from a Monday is Tuesday. This is the usual convention for deadlines, service levels and notice periods, where the clock starts the day after the triggering event.
The two conventions are not contradictory, they answer different questions. Counting asks how many working days a period contains; projection asks which date you reach after that many working days.
Service Levels and Response Times
Working days are how most support agreements are written, because promising a response in three days means something very different over a bank holiday weekend than in the middle of a working week.
Watch the difference between business days and business hours. A four hour response target inside a nine to five window behaves quite differently from four elapsed hours, and neither is what a business day calculation measures.
Time zones matter for the trigger. A ticket raised at 23:00 in one country may already be the next working day for the team receiving it. Agree which clock starts the count before arguing about whether a target was met.
Clear Days and Legal Deadlines
Legal drafting often says clear days, meaning both the first and last day are excluded from the count. Fourteen clear days notice is longer than fourteen days, and the difference has decided cases.
Courts commonly extend deadlines that land on a non working day to the next working day, but the rule is not universal and occasionally runs the other way. Check the procedural rules that apply rather than assuming.
Statutory definitions of business day vary. Some exclude bank holidays only in specific jurisdictions, some include Saturdays. Where a deadline carries consequences, the governing document is the authority, not a calculator.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting holidays entirely. A December project plan that ignores Christmas is out by several days, and that is usually the plan that matters most.
Assuming everyone shares your weekend. Cross border work with the Gulf, and in some sectors with parts of Asia, needs the weekend setting changed.
Mixing up counting and projecting. Five working days between two dates and five working days after a date are different calculations, and using the wrong one shifts everything by a day.
Treating business days as fixed at five per week. A four week period is not twenty working days when a holiday falls inside it, and multiplying instead of counting is how that error creeps in.
